You can quench the Spirit (1 Thess 5:19), and grieve the Spirit (Eph 4:30), but not be slain in the Spirit. WHAT THIS DOES AND DOES NOT MEAN. So, to sum up, when a person is slain by the Spirit (falls under the power, falls to the ground, or falls down as dead), that individual arises knowing that God has touched him and met his need. We are not claiming that all examples of being slain in the Spirit are fakes or responses to a touch or push. Don Stewart :: What Does It Mean to Be Slain in the Spirit? There are a number of examples of this phenomenon throughout the Scripture; let’s examine some of these.
At best, being “slain” might qualify as an occasional spiritual phenomenon, but certainly not something that has clear biblical warrant or precedent. Regarding this phenomenon, Charles Finney wrote in his autobiography something that happened during one of his revivals: “I observed a woman— supposing she was in a fainting fit, she could not speak. In the modern practice of being slain in the Spirit, falling down is usually associated with a particular charismatic leader. The person is then incapacitated for a period of time. This does not mean the person dies, but that he/she is so overcome by the presence of the Spirit that he/she falls down to the ground being completely overcome. Some charismatic Christians use these phrases to describe an individual in religious ecstasy who falls to the floor when he is overcome by the power of the holy spirit. The most frequent occurrence of being “slain in the Spirit” might be when a preacher or evangelist touches a person and that causes them to be “slain in the Spirit.” This occurs when a person is supposedly overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit and faints or falls to the ground in physical powerlessness. This is not something that alot of people like to talk about, or are capable of explaining to a nonbeliever what it is, and what the benefits of doing it are.
