Neo-Confucianism was also adopted as the guiding philosophy in Japan during the Tokugawa period (1603–1867). It was used to provide a heavenly sanction for the existing social order. Though, at times, Confucianism and Buddhism are similar in certain aspects, they are world apart in their beliefs, ideas, base, etc such as the former is more secular and latter is spiritual in nature. Most of the leading Confucian thinkers in the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties are now described in English as Neo-Confucians, using a term of somewhat ambiguous scope and significance. Nearly everyone in the educated class was exposed to basic Confucian texts.

So I've been reading a fair bit of neo confucianism lately, and from what i understand, it was partly formed because of a perceived threat from the foreign philosophy/religion of Buddhism.
