It took Fletcher 18 years to produce his magnum opus, The Art of Looking Sideways (2001). Alan Fletcher is known as one of the most influential figures in post-war British graphic design. A wartime evacuee to Christ's Hospital boarding school at Horsham, he disliked its traditional ethos and in 1949 enrolled at art school. The ‘soft’ launch on 31 May, was the moment when a rich mix of Alan’s work had been curated and digitised, important texts had been collected and commissioned, and the shop was ready to open. The Alan Fletcher Archive website project began two years ago and was initiated by Alan’s daughter Raffaella with archivist Sarah Copplestone. In his obituary, he was described by The Daily Telegraph as "the most highly regarded graphic designer of his generation, and probably one of the most prolific".
