I have been at square one for way too long (Donde está baño?) When I practice with native Spanish speakers, they all say that I speak very well. Everyone seems to have their own definition of what fluency really means, but it can generally be boiled down to two different levels: Conversational Fluency. Some people take years to learn a language, some live in a place where the language is widely spoken and never learn to even properly construct a sentence.

When people find out that I’ve managed to become fluent in Spanish fast in 6 weeks, they usually don’t believe me. Becoming fluent in Spanish means that you need to address all four aspects of the language – speaking, listening, reading and writing.

You should try to immerse yourself in the language as much as you can. Depends what you mean by fluent. As with any other industry, landing a job … If you mean fluent as you can hold a conversation, not feel lost all the time, and express yourself decently, then 5 years of school and 6 months living in a Spanish Country practicing all the time. Watch YouTube and Netflix shows in Spanish. Additionally, you should get in plenty of conversation practice, read in Spanish, do writing exercises, surround yourself with some Spanish language every day and have at least an understanding of grammar.

At the same time, I have great days and poor days.

and am now ready to take it to the next level…..become fluent.

Fluent Spanish speakers don't talk like a book. It is a life-long process and I learn something new everyday.

Learning a language is a long process, especially if you want to get fluent. Define your goal. The last step is not as easy it as it sounds. Speaking and listening are hard to get exposure to, if you are self teaching.
